Subterranean Termites Microcerotermes

This genus builds mounds either on the ground or in elevated areas on trees, power poles and houses.  They are commonly found in large numbers grazing on hardwood which has existing decay.  The conversion of cellulose to food is done using bacteria in this group so characteristic black staining is found in their workings.
