The Women In Turf Program 2026 kicked off with a week of hands-on course preparation ahead of the Australian Women’s Classic which took place from 5 – 8 March, giving participants the opportunity to experience tournament conditions and learn directly from industry professionals.

Over seven days, the mentees worked alongside Head Greenkeeper James Newell and the Magenta Shores grounds team, gaining valuable experience in tournament preparation. Tasks included mowing greens, raking bunkers, and supporting the detailed work required to ensure the course met the high standards expected for professional competition.

For many of the participants, it was their first time working in a tournament environment.

Leah Heywood, 21, a qualified greenskeeper at Nelsons Bay Golf Club, said the experience had already provided valuable exposure to new skills.

“It’s been great. I’m getting really good exposure to doing new jobs and I’m loving cutting greens at such a prestigious event,” she said.

Leah said she was encouraged to apply for the program by a former colleague who recognised her passion for the industry.

“An old colleague told me to jump on this opportunity because I was passionate and love the industry, and that it would be great experience.”

For second-year apprentice Sienna Lee, 20 from Rich River Golf Club, the opportunity to work at a professional tournament was one of the highlights of the week.

“I saw the ad and thought it would be a good opportunity, and I was surprised that I got in. I’m stoked to be a part of it,” she said.

Sienna said working alongside experienced turf professionals had been an invaluable learning opportunity.

“I’m loving it. All of the staff have been really good with their time and teaching me new skills. I’m excited about getting to work a tournament and seeing what goes into it, as well as meeting new people in the industry.”

The program also provides mentees with the chance to learn from each other and see different approaches to turf management across the industry.

“I’m really interested in seeing the different ways people at other courses do the same jobs as we do and the attention to detail that goes into it,” Leah said. “I’m also really happy to be working with the other girls and getting to know them.”

Envu’s Dave Hurst, Territory Business Development Specialist (T&O), was on site throughout the week to mentor and support the group as they developed new skills and built connections within the industry.

Developed in collaboration with John Deere, the Women in Turf Program is designed to support and empower the next generation of women in sports turf. Through mentorship, industry exposure, and practical learning opportunities, the initiative helps participants build the skills, confidence, and networks needed to succeed in turf management.

Rachel Carson, Head of Commercial Operations ANZ and Managing Director at Envu, said programs like Women in Turf are vital for the continued growth and diversity of the industry.

“Programs like Women in Turf help strengthen our industry and show that talent knows no boundaries,” Carson said.

“It’s inspiring to see the mentees take the lead in their own journey, and I’m excited for what the future holds for this next generation and the mark they will make in sports turf management.”

Envu would like to extend a special thank you to James Newell and the entire Magenta Shores team for hosting the group and helping deliver such a valuable learning experience.

As the program continues throughout the year, the mentees will participate in further development opportunities designed to broaden their knowledge, strengthen their professional networks, and support their long-term careers in the turf industry.
